I can tell the people sitting adjacent from me on the double-decker bus bound for Victoria train station that they had just left a ‘motivational’ seminar. They were all hyped up, juiced and excited. I can ’see’ their bodies radiating with anticipation to apply what they had learned.

My ears perked up when I heard one say to the other, “Tomorrow I shall start the journey of getting to know myself.”

“Tomorrow? Why tomorrow? Do it now, man. Tomorrow gives you a sense of procrastinating, remember?” replied the other gently slapping his friend on the back of the head.

“You’re right,” said the first guy as he brushed his hair into place.

From their earlier exchanges it was clear to me that they were talking about self confidence. The seminar made them realise that for them to build and gain more self confidence within themselves they would have to get to know themselves first.

“Listen, Harry. We have at least 25 minutes before we get to Victoria station. Let’s make full use of this and start that list,” said the taller, more excited young man.

Out came the pads and pens.

It appeared to me that the list they were referring to was the list of ‘know thy self’. They would write what they fear or feel less confident about in one column and in the next they would write what action they can take to face that fear or situation that they feel unconfident in so as to gain confidence and grow stronger from within.

This ritual went on literally until the bus reached Victoria station and everyone got off. Ideas were flowing endlessly from one person to the other.

I followed them into Victoria train station forecourt eager to learn more. I overheard Harry say, “Let’s take the slow train home and continue exploring. What do you say?” “Right on,” came the response, and off they went, walking briskly raring to go, keen to sit at their seats to continue exploring.

I liked that: Go exploring. That made me think.

I ask you to go explore and find out where you lack self confidence and what you can do to build on it. Go explore, go ahead and face some of these fears, learn from them and grow more confident and stronger. Each experience will make you more self confident, courageous and more relaxed.

Self confidence is the first requisite to many accomplishments. As your self confidence grows, so too will your accomplishments.

So today, after dinner or when the kids have gone to sleep, start a journal in much the same way that the excited youngsters on the bus did. Divide the page into two columns. In one write what you feel unconfident about and in the other the action that you can take to feel confident.

Go exploring. Go one step further. Why not ask your spouse or partner to assist you with this. You might discover a couple of things about yourself that you didn’t know existed. When you know yourself more, this alone could give you the added confidence in yourself, in the sense that you are taking the first step to attaining self confidence.

Also the upside to all this is that you might be pleasantly surprised.

You might find that you were more confident in certain areas than you thought you were. Your spouse or partner might say, “Are you kidding? You overflow with confidence when you make your annual work speeches.” But you thought you totally lacked self confidence.

Now is that a pleasant surprise, a pleasant confidence booster!

So, go explore. Make that list and be pleasantly surprised, and work on those issues that require your attention.

When you have the necessary knowledge and know-how on ways to become self confident, all that remains is for you to take consistent action.

By being committed to taking action daily or whenever the need arises, you will have all the self confidence that you want, and more.

When you combine your commitment with taking persistent action, by following through with all that you have learned you will have a recipe for becoming a more confident you.

I ask you to make a personal pledge today to adopt the learning and taking action habits.

These habits will serve you well. They will allow you to accomplish many great things during your lifetime. And in due course the way you think and feel about yourself will dramatically improve.

So, rather than just thinking about this, let’s consider 2 ways you can get busy to take action to breed that self confidence:

1. Take it easy: A friend of mine used to say, “Chill out” whenever she felt uptight and under confident about a particular thing that she had to do.

Initially I did not understand it. But after a while, I took on board what she meant. If you take everything too seriously you will feel overwhelmed and less confident of your abilities to perform well.

If you relax or chill out, you will accomplish more, and in this lighter frame of mind you will notice that you actually have more self confidence that you had previously thought.

2. Ignore and laugh at what you read in the tabloids: Let me put it another way: Ignore anything you see that relate to what they call the’ perfect body’.

So what is the perfect body? Skinny? Very skinny? Skin and bones?

Is this how we are supposed to judge people? In my opinion, we judge people not by the frame of their body, rather by the frame of their mind.

Sincere people do not judge others by the body that the mind lives in. They see the mind, the smile, the eyes, and the real person that you are.

Genuine people are more likely to enjoy your company because you are friendly, kind and considerate, conscientious and courteous.

Be confident in that knowledge.

Many unconfident people hold themselves back and away from approaching others or making themselves approachable by others because they are unconfident about their bodies in one way or another.

Let go of that unconfident feeling.

Look at your body in front of a mirror as often as you can. Conjure up a Hollywood smile whilst looking up and down from the top of your head to the tip of your toes or shoes, saying, “Yes” and walk away and continue with the rest of your day.

Do that as many times as possible and for as long as possible whilst genuinely holding that Hollywood smile. It is imperative that you walk away before the smile starts to fade. If you start with once a day for 1 second, that’s better than not doing it at all.

Smile, laugh and lighten up. Don’t take things too seriously and enjoy the way you feel and look. Enjoy life more, build on your self confidence, and you will feel more appealing and attractive from within.

Remember, your inner world creates your outer world.

When searching for a job many people first peruse the job title then the salary. If they see the salary is high, they believe that that particular position is out of their reach and so they move on to the next job vacancy.

Why is that?

It’s because they don’t believe they are good enough or worthy or deserve such a position. They have the common belief, “If they’re going to pay that much money, they must expect a lot, and I don’t believe I can do what they expect,” and so they don’t bother applying.

Has this ever happened to you?

Who’s to say you’re not good enough? The interviewer? No. You decided you weren’t good enough. You decide you don’t have the necessary qualifications.

Maybe you’re qualified, but you don’t seem to believe so. Maybe you can do that job, but your beliefs are holding you back. There are people out there who do land jobs that they are not qualified for; it’s their self confidence and belief that they can do the job that gets them hired.

I know a person who was capable of doing a particular job, but he did not apply for it because he believed he could not do it. His limiting, self sabotaging beliefs held him back. He felt he was unworthy of such a high-paying job. That’s all he saw – high paying job, and that’s what scared him off.

It is imperative that you become aware of how your beliefs can hold you back from achieving what you want in life, from applying for a high-paying job that you want, going for the promotion, asking for a raise, and more.

Detect your limiting beliefs, challenge them and raise your monetary level.

See how you react when you notice a job that you want that pays higher than the figure you are comfortable with. If you sense a feeling of ‘undeservingness’, challenge it; talk yourself out of it.

“Sure I can do that job. I’ve done this sort of thing before, many times and for years. So what if they’re paying a lot of money. Heck, that’s for me. I’m worth that amount…” or something on those lines; whatever makes you comfortable and happy to say.

Have the confidence and courage to reject those false limiting beliefs that stand in your way, and improve on your life.

Remember, you attract into your life what you think and believe. Have the empowering and optimistic thoughts and beliefs to attract more situations that are in line with your desires.
