Have you ever felt suddenly anxious or “on edge” and didn’t know why? I know I have.

There are many reasons why we might feel fearful at different times. We get scared about things like physical danger, accidents, natural disasters, and so on. These are all situations where fear can be helpful because it triggers the “fight or flight” response, which floods our bodies with adrenaline and prompts us to defend ourselves or flee the danger.

Unfortunately, there are also plenty of other situations where the fight or flight response is unnecessarily triggered and we end up feeling threatened and defensive even when there is nothing harmful about the present moment.

For example, we often fear job interviews, we fear public speaking engagements, social gatherings, sports and other performance activities, doctor and hospital visits – what about dentist visits (yuk).

These situations are not physically threatening yet our bodies often react to them as if they were.

Have you ever struggled with irrational fears like these?

Even though they may seem irrational, they actually have a simple cause: your thoughts.

When you are faced with a situation that you feel unprepared to handle, your thoughts begin racing with horrible possibilities. Your thoughts in this moment might sound something like this: “I can’t give a speech in front of people, what if I mess up?” or “I’m no good at sports; I’ll only embarrass myself if I try to play” or “I don’t want to go to the doctor; what if he finds something awful?”

As these thoughts race through your mind they trigger the fear response and your body begins reacting as if you were in actual physical danger.

When fear begins creeping through your body, you will notice some unmistakable signs and symptoms. These signs include tightening of your muscles, especially in the neck, shoulder and back area; you may also feel a tightening or queasiness in your abdomen; tightness or pressure in the chest, shortness of breath, pounding heart, restlessness, and muscle weakness or shakiness in the arms and legs.

Beyond the physical sensations you may also notice negative emotions like defensiveness, irritability, frustration, anger, aggression, sadness, and helplessness. Continuously being faced with fearful situations can also lead to more serious physical and emotional problems such as insomnia, depression, appetite changes, weight loss or weight gain, and paranoia.

So, what can you do when you feel overwhelmed by fear?

Positive self-talk is one way to begin shifting your thoughts from fearful to calming. Rather than worrying about negative things that could happen, you might soothe yourself by saying things like: “There’s nothing to be afraid of; it will all work out fine; I believe I can handle anything; all is well.”

Even better, intend to do everything you can to encourage a positive outcome for the fearful situation. You could practice giving a speech repeatedly until you feel more comfortable, or visualize the doctor giving you a clean bill of health.

When you change the thoughts that are triggering your fear response, the fearful feelings subside.

I haven’t written a post for a couple of weeks. I’m sorry about that. Excuse? No excuse. Been focusing on upgrading, and redesigning this blog. It’s really exciting. Coming soon.

So, back to this blog…

Who are you? Why do you act the way you do? What runs your life?

Your beliefs is who you are and your beliefs make you act the way you do. You see your world through your beliefs.

With that in mind, the core beliefs that you hold, whether good or bad, will make your life your good or bad. If you have good, pleasant beliefs you will have a good and pleasant life. If, on the other hand, you have bad, dire beliefs, that’s how you will see and live in your world.

If you’re not happy with where you are now, it makes sense to address your core beliefs.

Would you like to change a belief right now?

Think of something, anything, that you believe to be so. I always use the example of ‘the sun will rise tomorrow’. Now, with that thought of the sun rising tomorrow, think more about the picture that you are seeing of the sun rising; think of the colours, or is it black and white? Notice any sounds; loud or soft sounds? What feelings come up as you picture and hear the sounds?

Make a mental note of the picture, sound and feelings.

Now move on and do the same thing for something you don’t believe. The best example here is ‘all politicians are honest’. Repeat the same process as before. See the picture, hear the sound and note how you feel. Observe how your mind represents this belief.

You now have two beliefs to evaluate and compare; one belief that is true for you (the sun will rise tomorrow) and one that isn’t (all politicians are honest).

Get a notepad or a piece of paper and quickly write down the different qualities; compare the two and write down what you saw, heard and felt. For example, when you thought about the sun rising you may have felt warm, yet when you pictured the politicians being honest, you may have felt cold inside.

Now that you know how a true and not so true belief works you can make full use of that. You can now empower the beliefs that you want and also weaken those that you don’t want.

That’s the great news. Want to test this out?

Think of something that you want but have been unable to get. Pause and notice what surfaces. Did you have the same pictures, sounds or feelings as when you thought of the politicians?

Go back to the belief that the sun will rise tomorrow. Allow all the pictures, sounds and feelings to emerge. Once these qualities appear, immediately direct your thoughts to the thing that you want.

You will note that the belief to this thing happening has become more possible that before. Why? Because you’ve merged a present core belief with one that you consciously want to believe.

The change in belief may not necessarily be too quick – depends on what it is that you ant – but rest assured that soon you will have what it is that you are seeking, or at least you will find yourself actively pursuing what it is that you want.

Why? Because your new belief gets stronger and stronger as time goes by. As surely as you believe the sun will rise tomorrow, you will believe that you can get what it is that you want. The belief that the sun will rise tomorrow is more powerful than the belief that you cannot have what you want.

Try it out and let me know how it worked for you.

Many people claim: “Oh, that’s just the way I am. There’s nothing I can do about that!”

Is there something they can do?

They say there’s nothing they can do to change because they believe it to be so. They believe that’s who they are and they believe they cannot change.

Well, the thing is, they can change – if they want to.

It’s important for you to realise and accept that beliefs are not facts; they are merely interpretations you have concluded based on your own life experience. If, for example, you lived in a home where money was lacking, your beliefs, based on your life experience at that time, will be there’s not enough money to go around. That’s what you concluded.

The fact is, there is plenty of money to go around.

You may know that consciously, but deep down, unconsciously, your beliefs are in conflict with what you consciously think. And since your unconscious mind is more powerful than your day-to-day thinking, your conscious thinking, your beliefs will hold you back from having the amount of money that you desire.

More often than not, your core beliefs are not your friends. They ‘work hard’ to keep you where you are. To have the money that you are seeking you would need to change or eliminate your core, limiting beliefs.

How can you do that?

Let’s say you want to have self-enhancing beliefs around the amount of money you want. Your first step is to find out what’s holding you back; identify the limiting, negative beliefs around money. Get yourself a journal and write down as many as you can.

For example, I am not good enough to have all the money I want, I will never be a success, I will never make £5,000 a month, and so on.

Now, ask yourself what beliefs you would like to hold. State them in a positive, optimistic way and write them down: I am good enough and deserving to have all the money I want, I am enjoying my success, I am becoming more and more prosperous, and so on.

The final step is to ask yourself, What can I do to have all the money I want? What can I do to fully enjoy my success? What can I do to become more prosperous and make £5,000 a month?

As you do that, your unconscious mind will attract and bring about ways to make your desires a reality. Your unconscious mind loves the ‘question and answer’ game. You ask the questions and it will bring about the answers.

And when it does, you MUST take the necessary action. As you ask the questions and take action, the limiting, negative beliefs that you once held will weaken and change or get eliminated.

So, after all, there is something people can do about the way they are. Right?

Are you are having a hard time getting motivated to take action to do the things that you want, to take the necessary steps to get you where you want to be?

Do you find yourself wrestling with your negative thoughts and beliefs that only seem to bring in to your life more challenges?

Now, let me ask you, Would you like to change all that?

I am sure you said yes, so here’s how.

First step: You have to be aware of the words that you use. When you spot yourself saying something negative or limiting, STOP immediately. Say CANCEL, CANCEL.

That’s the first step. Simple.

Second step: Imagine or visualise a barrier around your body or mind, or perhaps an image of the thought bouncing against your head and flying off somewhere into space. The idea is to deflect the thought.

Third step: Think or say a positive thought that opposes the one you just deflected. This thought is a positive statement or an affirmation, but done precisely. Not your typical ineffective affirmation.

Effective affirmations are purposely chosen words and phrases that replace old, limiting thoughts and beliefs with new empowering ones. It is important to word your affirmations in an effective manner so they can bring about the changes that you are seeking.

For example: If you repeat this affirmation: “I am successful”, do you think it would be effective enough to make any real change? Hardly. You know that this statement is not true, and no matter how hard you work on that affirmation it will be rejected by your unconscious mind because it conflicts directly with the beliefs that you already have.

So how do you go around this?

Fourth step: The answer is very simple. You word your affirmations or statements in a way that will be more readily accepted by your unconscious mind; where there will be much less resistance.

So going back to the example above, it will be far more effective and believable to reword the affirmation to something like: “I have a passionate desire to succeed. Success is my one and only option.” I am sure you can tell this one sounds more accepting.

And the great news is that your mind can actually see the possibility of it happening, so your unconscious mind will not offer any resistance.

The question I sense you asking is how long will it take for changes to take place. I hate to say that there really is no set time. It really depends on how intense your opposing belief is.

If you have an intense negative belief around success, as in this example, it will take longer for the change to take place. The best suggestion I can offer is keep reciting effective affirmations over and over until you feel the change is taking place.

If you start saying the affirmations then stop along the way or have lost your enthusiasm and motivation to carry on, I suggest you click on the link below:

There you will see effective motivating affirmations that are believable and will not face an impenetrable wall of opposing unconscious beliefs. The affirmations will make you a master of self-motivation, allowing you to move further ahead in life.

A sample of the affirmations:

I learn all that I can from setbacks and move on
I persist until I reach my objectives
I see opportunities all around me, and I am optimistic about my success
I am enthusiastic about everything that I do, and I give it my best effort
Each and every day is filled with accomplishments
I am fuelled by the desire to be the best that I can be
I take daily actions to achieve my goals in life
My creative mind is the foundation to my success
I enjoy taking daily steps to turn my dreams into reality
It is natural for me to set and achieve my goals
I recognise and use my strengths and skills to reach all my goals

Get motivated and stay motivated to achieve more. And while you’re at it, why not make it your destiny to accomplish many great things in your life?

“Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.” Samuel Johnson

I can tell the people sitting adjacent from me on the double-decker bus bound for Victoria train station that they had just left a ‘motivational’ seminar. They were all hyped up, juiced and excited. I can ’see’ their bodies radiating with anticipation to apply what they had learned.

My ears perked up when I heard one say to the other, “Tomorrow I shall start the journey of getting to know myself.”

“Tomorrow? Why tomorrow? Do it now, man. Tomorrow gives you a sense of procrastinating, remember?” replied the other gently slapping his friend on the back of the head.

“You’re right,” said the first guy as he brushed his hair into place.

From their earlier exchanges it was clear to me that they were talking about self confidence. The seminar made them realise that for them to build and gain more self confidence within themselves they would have to get to know themselves first.

“Listen, Harry. We have at least 25 minutes before we get to Victoria station. Let’s make full use of this and start that list,” said the taller, more excited young man.

Out came the pads and pens.

It appeared to me that the list they were referring to was the list of ‘know thy self’. They would write what they fear or feel less confident about in one column and in the next they would write what action they can take to face that fear or situation that they feel unconfident in so as to gain confidence and grow stronger from within.

This ritual went on literally until the bus reached Victoria station and everyone got off. Ideas were flowing endlessly from one person to the other.

I followed them into Victoria train station forecourt eager to learn more. I overheard Harry say, “Let’s take the slow train home and continue exploring. What do you say?” “Right on,” came the response, and off they went, walking briskly raring to go, keen to sit at their seats to continue exploring.

I liked that: Go exploring. That made me think.

I ask you to go explore and find out where you lack self confidence and what you can do to build on it. Go explore, go ahead and face some of these fears, learn from them and grow more confident and stronger. Each experience will make you more self confident, courageous and more relaxed.

Self confidence is the first requisite to many accomplishments. As your self confidence grows, so too will your accomplishments.

So today, after dinner or when the kids have gone to sleep, start a journal in much the same way that the excited youngsters on the bus did. Divide the page into two columns. In one write what you feel unconfident about and in the other the action that you can take to feel confident.

Go exploring. Go one step further. Why not ask your spouse or partner to assist you with this. You might discover a couple of things about yourself that you didn’t know existed. When you know yourself more, this alone could give you the added confidence in yourself, in the sense that you are taking the first step to attaining self confidence.

Also the upside to all this is that you might be pleasantly surprised.

You might find that you were more confident in certain areas than you thought you were. Your spouse or partner might say, “Are you kidding? You overflow with confidence when you make your annual work speeches.” But you thought you totally lacked self confidence.

Now is that a pleasant surprise, a pleasant confidence booster!

So, go explore. Make that list and be pleasantly surprised, and work on those issues that require your attention.
