Before you attend a meeting that you might be worried about, spend a few minutes prior to that meeting thinking about the actual outcome that you want; what do you want out of it.

You will be amazed at how different the outcome can be.

Let me remind you of this phrase, “Where intention goes, energy flows.”

Make it a point to apply this concept to as many situations as you possibly can. Set your outcomes by carefully choosing your intentions. Do this before any meetings, any phone calls, any special functions or banquets. Before any situation.

If you were to set an intention today, what would that be?

A managing director unexpectedly dropped his fountain pen, interrupting his fidgeting. It was at that moment that he realised he had been blankly staring out the window for a good fifteen minutes. He quickly shrugged his shoulders and dismissed the bizarre incident as a one-off moment of tiredness.

However, it was not until he was stuck in the home-bound traffic jam, that he once again caught himself fidgeting and staring into thin air. As far back as he can remember he had never fidgeted or felt bored.

From an early age he learned to make full use of his time constructively, utilising his skills and capabilities. So what has suddenly triggered these feelings of boredom? He had no acceptable or sound explanation.

Wasting no time, that same night he searched and profiled an executive coach and sent an enquiring email. A few days later he was professionally airing his concerns to a life coach.

The coach re-visited certain skills that had been dormant for years. The daily routine of the current job had eventually pushed aside any other skills that were not relevant to his present role; to the point that he consciously forgot he even had them. And so boredom was born.

With the expert guidance of that coach this man has learned to get in touch with, and bring back to life his hibernating skills and capabilities to help him step up and achieve more; killing boredom in the process.

If you are to step up to achieve more, what inactive skill, or skills would you call upon?

To achieve more and to be a high performer, you would want to be both active and highly productive in all that you do.

You can save yourself a lot of time and effort, and avoid the trial and error method, simply by learning from others who had achieved bigger results in the same field as yours.

By learning what other successful people did, and by adopting their methods into your life you, too, can achieve similar success.

I encouraged one of my clients to leisurely read as many biographies of highly successful people as she could. She might find the biographies pleasurable to read and she might also find them truly inspiring and motivating.

Having read a few such books, this client was surprised to learn that even though they were highly successful people, they still constantly looked for ways to improve the quality of their lives.

They still invested a huge amount of their time discovering and considering ways to be even more effective and productive in the service that they provide.

Constant and never-ending improvement! A great value worth importing into your life!

If you were to read a biography of a highly successful person in your field, whose biography would you read?

As I turned the door handle, she burst into my office, her head down shaking in disbelief, repeating the same question over and over again: “What was I thinking? I can’t believe I did that.”

“Did what?” I asked.

On the spur of the moment this debonair, well-spoken executive leapt out of her black leather chair and stormed into her boss’s office at 5:30pm, demanded a raise and left the building.

On the spur of the moment, on impulse, without thinking.

Most of us have done something in our lives that we later question. Yet, who do we question? Who do we blame, or thank, for our actions? We hold our spontaneous or consciously deliberate thoughts accountable for our emotions and behaviour.

Everything begins with a thought. Our thoughts, our reflections, direct the lives that we lead. Our thoughts can drive us to fulfil our dreams.

If you were to change the thought “if only” to “next time” for a day or so, what new opportunities will open for you?

By the way – she got the raise!

In my experience, I have found this particular question to be very exciting and intriguing, “What would you do, if you only knew that you could?”

Some people respond by raising their eyebrows silently, others take in a deep breath and hold it in deep thought, until I remind them to resume breathing. Most of them, however, simply resurrect a list of wishes or the things they don’t want.

The idea behind this question is for it not to simply scratch the surface, but for it to go much deeper. It is a soul-searching question that could allow you to achieve much more in your life.

One person sat back in his chair and closed his eyes. A couple of minutes later he smiled and went on to inform me how he can picture his bedroom as a child: each wall a mosaic of pictures of courtroom events and magazine and newspaper cut-outs of dramatic trials.

He went on unfolding his younger years, until he suddenly frowned and told his tale of family complications that lead him to quit law school.

In the end, the man had rekindled his burning desire to accomplish his forgotten childhood dream of becoming a lawyer.

Within a couple of months, this young man was registered at law school and had found a junior job in a respectable law firm. His dream, his ‘what would you do’ came back to life. He went back to follow his passion, and the inspiration gained allowed him to be more fulfilled than at any other time in his life.

If you ask yourself, “What would I do, if I only knew that I could?” What would it be that you would do?
