A number of people may have either tried to give up smoking, did all they could to lose weight, or worked hard on building their self esteem and self confidence. But in the long term did not achieve what they were after.

The question is, Why is that?

It simply boils down to their unconscious beliefs. Their core, fundamental beliefs stood in their way and blocked them from getting what they wanted.

For example, let’s say you wanted to lose weight, you got excited, felt high, probably joined a gym or started going out for long brisk walks or jogging in the park. Perhaps you even made a huge decision to eat less fattening foods and more fruits and vegetables.

Off you started with the ‘new you’.

What happened a few days or a couple of weeks later? More than likely you went back to your old eating habits and your exercise regimen, the motivation dwindled, and as the days went by it evaporated into no exercise at all.

Again, we ask, Why is that?

It’s because your core, limiting beliefs prevented you from doing what you wanted. The limiting beliefs are by far more powerful than your ‘wants’ and more powerful, in most cases, that your willpower.

Your limiting beliefs are saying, “Hey, you enjoy the food, so why give it up. Forget exercising. Live a little…”

Limiting, self sabotaging beliefs live in the unconscious mind. This unconscious mind runs our lives – from our breathing, to our heart beat, to healing and much, much more. Approximately 90% to 95% of our lives are run by our unconscious mind.

so, since our beliefs reside within the unconscious mind, they, too, run our lives.

The majority of your beliefs were formed when you were younger. You were initially programmed by your parents, teachers, friends, ministers, governments, culture, and more. As you grew older, your beliefs were formed from the media, people at work, your bosses, and so on.

You may be aware of some of your limiting beliefs, but there are plenty that you have no idea about, and do not even know they exist. They are buried deep within your unconscious mind.

Back to the example, if you are trying to lose weight and you have beliefs that skinny people look ugly, nothing but skin and bones, your unconscious mind will stick to those beliefs and will not ‘allow’ you to lose weight. It does not want you to look ugly and be nothing but skin and bones. It does not want to go against what you already believe.

So, what do you do to lose weight?

You go to work to change those sabotaging, limiting beliefs. You change or eliminate them, and then implant the beliefs that you do want.

How?

Start off with one to three affirmations and say them to yourself as many times as you can throughout the day.

Affirmations such as: “I give myself rewards for losing weight” or “I choose to lose weight” or “I love and improve my body” or “I allow myself to control my appetite” or “I choose to eat right and exercise smart”.

Repeating your chosen statements often instils in your unconscious mind your intention and commitment to lose weight. In time, your limiting beliefs will have no power and you will have the new, enhancing beliefs.

What do I mean by that?

Have you ever really, I mean really wanted something and you did all that it takes to get it?

That’s what I’m talking about. Where you take all the necessary action to achieve it - no matter what.

And the great thing is that all the action that you took along the way, was confident action, and it was action that you readily and easily did. Taking action was very natural for you.

Why?

Because you really wanted to achieve it. Your inner self confidence surfaced, your inner motivation allowed you to take all the necessary action you wanted to make it happen.

That’s the power of really, really and deeply wanting something.

Self confidence and action become automatically you.

And let me close off with this quote by Thomas Carlyle:

“Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidence like accomplishment.”

Linda hated social events. She found them frightening and felt that all eyes were on her from the minute she walked into the room. The glaring eyes squinted, scrutinising her inch by inch, from top to bottom, seeing through her skin and into her deep feelings, her feeling of low self confidence.

Here is how Linda recalled how she changed her self-identity from being scared in social situations, to being confident and at ease in any social setting by changing only one small thing in her life:

“I used to really hate going to work social events and family get-togethers; especially my husband’s family Sunday lunches. Even though I’d been married for over ten years and knew his family for a long time, I still felt awkward and out of place.

In both situations it seemed to me that everyone was laughing and having a great time, easily mixing and mingling with both people they know and didn’t know. Oh, how I envied them!

I always felt embarrassed and uncomfortable in these situations. I felt wide eyes examining me, dissecting me, looking through my shield of having no self confidence.

I used to shake nervously as I stood quietly in a corner somewhere, on my own. My cramped uneasiness probably showed from the tense look on my face. I would look down and avoid catching someone’s glaring eyes.

At work events, I would stick close to someone I knew well for the duration of the event, subtly looking at my watch from time to time counting the minutes until it would be appropriate for me to leave and go home.

When I learned about confidence building methods and how one small change can have a knock-on effect on many areas in my life, I decided to have a go and I do one thing differently that I haven’t done before.

I decided to walk into a social situation alone, with a magnetic and contagious smile on my face, shoulders upright and my head held high and to make eye contact and say, “Hello” to anyone who so much as looked over at me. I would simply pretend that I am feeling very confident.

I had no idea what impact this small change in my expression and posture would have on my experience. But I can tell you that I have never been the same since.

I now easily approach people and strike up a conversation. And, likewise, people come over and talk to me. I smile and laugh more as the conversation grows. This makes me feel happier, more confident and more at ease.

Since then, I have used this simple method of making one little change in a single area of my life to initiate lots of other changes. This has really given me a confidence boost in so many ways, and in so many areas that I feel like a changed person already.”

By the way, this could be you. You could easily be the Linda in the story.
Believe that you can have self confidence in one area, in one part of any area and build on it, one step at a time.

“Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the face.” Helen Keller

These are great words of wisdom from someone who lived and breathed self confidence. If anyone should think ill of the world it is surely Helen Keller.

Yet she did not allow her situation to stand in her way.

As a deaf and blind person she went on to be an amazing and inspiring author and activist. Her self confidence was as strong as ever, never giving in to her lack of sight or language.

What can we learn from this?

We can look at our habitual thoughts, and ask ourselves, What can we change? Which thoughts are working against us? Which thoughts are not giving us the desired results or outcomes?

Much like Helen Keller, we can transform our negative emotional habits into beneficial habits; ones that will have us look at ourselves and the world from a different perspective. One that is empowering and enhancing.

As you focus on attaining constructive emotional habits, change will take place. You will see and feel yourself improving and becoming more and more self confident.

And as you do, step out of your comfort zone and do something you would normally not do. Once done, celebrate that action and reward yourself.
