I have been using affirmation for a while now, and I can vouch that they do work. It is important, however, to know that the results are not necessarily immediate or quick. Perseverance here is a must - there’s no denying that. After all, if you wish to replace a negative thought that you had all your life, do you think you can replace it with a positive thought within a couple of days or a week? Highly unlikely. That’s the reality. I feel it’s only fair for you to know that right from the beginning.

For you to lack self confidence you would have had numerous negative messages instilled into your unconscious, and these thoughts have become your core beliefs. What you have to do now is reverse the process and instil positive messages, beliefs into your unconscious mind to counteract the negative and replace them.

And one way to do so is through affirmations - positive and empowering statements.

Here’s how you write powerful affirmations:

1) Present tense. The affirmations must be worded in the present tense, not the future. Not, “I will learn to have self confidence” or “I will lose weight or stop smoking”. Instead, “I choose to be confident” or “I choose to lose weight or become healthy”. The words “choose to” eases the concepts into your unconscious mind and puts it in the present moment - as if it’s happening now.

2) Believable. It is important, at the beginning, to stretch your affirmations, but to a limit. Make it believable to you. For example, “I choose to make $20,000 a month” whereas you are only presently making $5,000 and you do not really believe you can make that £20,000, your unconscious mind will more than likely reject it. It’s good to stretch, but at this stage, stretch within reason. Say, “I am making $7,000 or more consistently a month”.

3) Use your emotions. When you recite your affirmations, it is more powerful when you do so aloud and in front of a mirror, looking right into your eyes. Your unconscious mind picks up on your emotions. Compare the two here: Let’s assume you said, “I choose to live a healthy life” as if you were reading an article in the newspaper, compared to saying it with compassion and enthusiasm. Which one do you think is more powerful and will bring results?

That’s the process of writing and reciting the affirmations. Remember, repeat the affirmations as often as you can. Multiple repetition is the key. To eliminate those negative thoughts and beliefs about yourself, those ones that you had for years, you need to work on giving the positive ones more power, and you do so by repetition -daily, multiple repetition.

Be patient with yourself. Affirmations may take a few weeks or perhaps months before you notice a huge difference. Be OK with that. Spot the signs along the way, be happy with them and be encouraged and motivated to continue.

Low self confidence can stand in your way just when you need it most; where you cannot be at your best, where you start to stumble or stutter, where you start looking down at your shoes, where you fidget or turn away and walk back into your limited comfort zone.

Well, I have great news for you!

Feeling and becoming confident quickly, almost instantaneously, is possible, and you can do it. With repetition and continued practise within a short period of time you will have all the confidence that you ever wanted; you can have supreme, unlimited self confidence.

Here are two powerful ways to get you started. They will help you gain self confidence and make you feel better about yourself quickly:

1. Do something you are good at

When you do something that you are competent and proficient at, you will quickly feel the surge of self confidence that comes with the feeling behind your skill and talent.

What are you great at? Painting, writing, cooking, jogging, holding parties and conferences, perhaps gardening. What is your strongest talent or skill? Once you have identified what you feel awesome at, think deep how that strength makes you feel. Allow that self confidence to flow through your entire body.

Keep focused on those feelings. And when you feel that you are ready think about the situation or event you do not feel comfortable about and transfer the confident feelings into that situation.

Feel yourself being more competent, courageous and confident as you tackle that situation. At your peak of confidence say three times, ‘Yes, that’s me!’ and notice how much more confident you have become.

Do that technique daily or as often as you can so as to strengthen it.

2. Remember all the things you have accomplished

This technique is an extension of the one above. Get yourself a note pad and jot down as many accomplishments that you can remember; particularly write the ones that you thought were going to be hard, but ended up being rather easy, or easier than you had anticipated.

Here are a few examples: any exams that you passed despite thinking that you wouldn’t; or an important meeting that you chaired with greater ease and confidence than you expected; hosted a party for your child that you never thought you could pull off. Think of as many scenarios as you can remember.

The idea here is to use these successful memories as points of reference. You thought you would never achieve them and yet you did. What does that tell you? It tells you that you have more self confidence that you think you have.

Combine the two strategies together and you have the ingredients to be a confident winner. Reinforce them with repetition and in due course nothing can stop you doing whatever you want or desire.

Have you ever wanted to do something, got excited, stood up all pumped and ready to go ahead and do it, but you froze at the last minute, where you stood in your place bringing up all the excuses why you cannot?

What stopped you? In one word – Fear.

What a horrible, life stalling four-letter word. We all feel it from time to time, and we hate it with a passion. And the terrible thing is, when you feel scared or fearful you do not feel confident, you do not feel you’re up to the ‘challenge’, you feel weak, not good enough.

“What you fear will appear!” I read this somewhere. What powerful words. Read it again. And how about this one:

F – False
E – Evidence
A – Appearing
R – Real

If I remember right, we were born with two fears – fear of falling and fear of noise. The rest we made up as we progressed through life.

So what do you do: do not hesitate, do not focus on the fear. Instead focus on the great outcome that you want and go ahead immediately and do what it is you wanted to do.

Walk through that fear that you created in your own mind with your own thoughts. More often than not, you created that fear that doesn’t even exist.

By the way – you can work through some of your fears within you by learning more about limiting beliefs; those beliefs that stand in your way, such as: I am not good enough to become a manager, I am scared to be rejected by her/him, I cannot make that presentation – they’ll laugh at me, and so on.

I wonder. Most of us are aware that laughter is the best ‘medicine’ for depression, releasing stress and more.

I am going to go beyond that, and it’s just my own thoughts here.

Since laughter has the ‘power’ to release you of stress, it must put you at ease, where you will relax, feel less self conscious, and I believe through laughter you connect with people and they with you. And once you have established that connection, you will more than likely have the people ‘on your side’ as it were.

I don’t mean start off a conversation by saying a joke or making a fool of yourself. Start off with a gentle smile and progress to finding a way to laugh and make others laugh. When making a presentation you feel less confident in making, place yourself at ease by starting off with a relevant incident that was funny.

Think what you can do to make others laugh, yourself laugh and you will all reap the benefits: from less stress to more confidence and then some.
