I have never done this in the past, so I hope on this occasion you will forgive me for doing it.

Last night I went to see someone I haven’t seen for a while. Over a light dinner, we spoke about all sorts of things, until our conversation went dead when he said, “I can’t believe it. I did it. I can’t believe it.”

I immediately stopped him. “Why can’t you believe it?”

“Oh, it’s just an expression,” his word stumbled as his eyes searched the restaurant for a distraction.

No, it’s not just an expression. That’s how many people live; through the I can’t believe it lens.

To achieve things in life, aside from having unstoppable confidence, motivation, persistent action, you must believe in yourself and in your capabilities.

We know that the mind is a goal-setting organism; it loves goals and loves to achieve them no matter what. So, knowing that and knowing what it is you want in life, how do you set about programming these goals into your goal-achieving unconscious mind?

One extremely powerful and effective way of programming your mind is through affirmations – positive statements said over and over in a specific way.

The statements, in time, will programme your mind through imagination. As you hear or say the affirmations you will imagine that statement as in the present – done and achieved.

When you imagine the affirmations while in a relaxed state it will be very hard for your unconscious mind to do anything else but make those affirmations a reality.

Make use of the affirmations. Pick the ones you like and use them daily, every day until what you want has happened. Look into a mirror and shout them if you can; if you can’t say them out loud in your mind and imagine them as if they have already materialised.

Now that we have established that you want to be more confident, it is important that, as well as taking the appropriate action to make it happen, you have to expect that you will have the self confidence that you seek.

Your brain, or more concisely, your unconscious mind is a goal-seeking organism. It loves goals, and it loves working towards them. When you set the goal of becoming self confident in a particular area of your life, it works day and night to make that happen.

They key here though is that you must set your unconscious mind to work on what you do want, as opposed to what you don’t.

In other words, making it your goal to “not make a mess of your presentation” instructs your unconscious mind to make a mess of the presentation. Your unconscious mind does not understand negatives.

If say, you do a Google search on “not make a mess of my presentation” you will get over 14 million ways of making a good presentation, power point presentation, how to make a presentation, good presentation design. Even Google doesn’t understand negativity! And your unconscious mind is like a computer – we’ve heard that many times.

So phrase what you want in the positive: “I will make a fantastic presentation” or “I am going to make the best presentation yet.” Come up with a sentence that means something to you, that makes you smile and go for it.

Expect it and you will get it. There is no room for doubt. Believe and expect.

Now that’s a very interesting question, don’t you think? Many people say, Oh, I lack self confidence, and when questioned where they seem to stumble by saying, Oh, well, you know, in life.

That is not specific enough. In much the same way you cannot go to the ticket booth at a train station and ask for a ticket to anywhere, or switch on your car sat navigator and expect to end up somewhere, you need a destination.

Where, specifically, do you need more self confidence? In your relationship with your spouse, co-worker, boss, in making a presentation, making a speech at a charity. Where?

To get what you want in life you must know what specifically it is that you want, and that includes self confidence.

So, in which area do you want more self confidence (relationships), which specific area (my tough-nut boss), what exactly do you want self confidence for (stand up for my rights).

Make a note of these and work on getting more self confidence. How? Spend a few minutes in the morning before hopping out of bed imagining yourself standing up to your boss and getting it your way (whatever it is that you want).

Do that for a while and notice the great difference in you.
