Many people experience difficulties in life and keep on struggling to make ends meet. The mind gets filled with negative thoughts and the temptation to quit becomes a welcome sight.

Mike was not moving ahead in life. He would start a project from home with the idea of making enough money to leave the job he hates. After a few weeks he gives up on the project. He has done this about six or seven times.

I asked him to spend the time necessary find a project that he thoroughly enjoyed doing; one that perhaps matched his talents, skills, strengths or deep interest. And then I asked him to make two lists; one to identify what he enjoys about it and the second to list what he doesn’t enjoy.

The good list of what he enjoys, I am happy to say, was much longer. He finally identified a project that he might continue with, where the potential of quitting was highly reduced.

Next, I asked him to scour the internet, go to book stores and his local library, and read about as many successful people who have achieved success from the same business as his.

“Learn from them all that you can. Learn how they challenged obstacles and setbacks and what they did to overcome them. If they managed to be a success, so can you.”

The big lesson here is to learn from other people. Follow the strategies that they did to achieve success.

If you wanted to achieve success in a particular area of your life, what would that area be? And whose strategies would you apply?

Many people want to start a small business that will add extra income at the initial stage, and that will develop into one that would not require too much effort; thereby giving them more space, time and freedom to do the other things in life that they enjoy.

The first vital step to successfully running your own business is to identify what you love to do; what brings you satisfaction and enjoyment. This provides you with the deep desire and passion to keep you motivated, and not to regard it as work, but as something you are happy in doing.

Believe in yourself and in your abilities that you can achieve what you want, and take massive action daily in the direction of your goals. At the end of each day, tick off your daily goals that you achieved and go over the next day’s goals. This way you keep your eyes on your targets and develope the attitude of success.

“When you know you want something, and you are passionate about it, you can make it happen.”

Do you have a hobby or talent that you are passionate about, that you feel you would like to take to the next level?

An agitated and troubled client came to see me not so long ago. He went straight into the session before he had his usual cup of tea.

“I don’t understand why the Managing Director favours the other managers and overlooks my contributions. That’s not right!” He said, shaking his head.

This perturbed client had felt for a long time that his Managing Director was more partial to the other managers, despite their obvious lack of commitment to their job and the company.

“Why can’t he see that I am more committed and productive than they are?” he went on to explain.

“A winner is someone who does not compare himself to others.”

By releasing the negative burden of comparison, the person will feel more at ease, and becomes more productive in a way that produces better results.

This way the client would focus his attention on himself, to perform at his best, rather than on the people he is comparing himself to. And in doing so, he will do what he thinks must be done and not be influenced by the others.

The only person you should compare yourself to is yourself.

If you were to adopt the Winner mentality today, would you be able to release the temptation to compare yourself to others?

Before you attend a meeting that you might be worried about, spend a few minutes prior to that meeting thinking about the actual outcome that you want; what do you want out of it.

You will be amazed at how different the outcome can be.

Let me remind you of this phrase, “Where intention goes, energy flows.”

Make it a point to apply this concept to as many situations as you possibly can. Set your outcomes by carefully choosing your intentions. Do this before any meetings, any phone calls, any special functions or banquets. Before any situation.

If you were to set an intention today, what would that be?

Jack just started his own business and he understood the advantage of holding presentations to promote his product. His challenge was fear of looking foolish and not communicating too clearly and convincingly to his audience. Fear was standing in his way, blocking his confidence.

He spent the next couple of weeks building up his self-confidence. Then he practised doing the entire presentation as if he was giving it to ten attendees.

He was slow at the beginning, nervously referring to his index cards for support. After a little while, he put the cards aside and carried on as if the cards weren’t even there. He focused his attention to an area as if there were ten people in the room, and went on with the presentation.

As he progressed into it, he gradually gained more confidence; his posture was tall and composed, his voice radiated courage, the spoken words showed his complete knowledge of the product. At the end, he was so impressed with himself that he laughed loudly and clapped hard and long. “Yes. Yes. Yes, I did it!”

I met up with him after a few days, and I asked him how he felt, he victoriously explained, “I didn’t fight it. I made it my intention to conquer the fear of making a presentation, and the only way to do it was for me to step right into it.”

That was his first step in conquering his fear of lacking confidence. A few weeks later, he held a small presentation to seventeen people, then twenty.

By gradually increasing your self-confidence, one small step at a time, you can reduce and overcome your fear of greater success.

If you have a fear that is holding you back from greater achievements in life, what would that fear be?
