… and gain more confidence.

The sad truth is that most of us are hesitant to start anything new; like starting up on our own, venturing into a partnership, applying for a new job, all because we are afraid that we might fail.

To those people, I say: Go ahead anyway, make mistakes and learn from them! That’s how you will gain that extra confidence.

It’s not necessary to wait until you have all the experience and knowledge required. There will always be something more to learn. By saying, “I’m not quite ready yet,” you are procrastinating. Yes, it is a form of procrastination. And it is also fear of failing.

How will you gain confidence if you shy away and not take the bull by the horns?

Be ‘good enough’ and go ahead. You don’t have to be ‘excellent’ to start.

Think about this: You don’t have to be good to start, but you have to start to be good. Now that’s the clue to gain that confidence that you needed.

You may never have enough experience to start. But once you muster up the courage to take that first giant step forward and start, the rest will fall into place.

Start now with what you do know. You will gain confidence along the way.

To many, success is getting what they want. Perhaps the same is for you, too.

A prime qualification for success is having self confidence. This prerequisite drives you to manifest what it is that you want; to make that goal of yours a reality, to achieve certain success.

Take the time to find out what it is that you want. To make it easier on yourself, make a list of what you DON’T want and then find the opposite. This will uncover your wants!

Then work on building your confidence to get what you want. And you can do so by allocating a ‘want of the month’. If what you desire requires more time, make it a ‘want of the quarter’ or make it the following month’s want.

Notice where your confidence is lacking and work to build on it. Dissect that want and find daily actions that can build on your self confidence.

If what you want is to land your ideal job, for example, and you get nervous at interviews, build your confidence by going to as many interviews as you can. Okay, daily might be a bit difficult in this case, but I believe you get the idea.

One very effective way for you to increase your self confidence is to first identify what is holding you back. Is it fear of failure, fear of rejection?

The second step is for you find ways to physically feel that fear, even in small ways. Go through the motions; the nervousness, the shaky hands, the thousands of butterflies flying around in your stomach. Get uncomfortable!

A client of Natalie wanted to set up a business selling conference space. He had extensive hotel conference and banqueting experience behind him, yet when it came for him to venture out alone, many fears and anxieties had surfaced.

Natalie’s suggestion was for him to tackle one fear one step at a time, no matter how big or small it may seem at the time. And to work on it until that fear had become either a thing of the past or it had been reduced to a point where it is virtually insignificant.

For him to increase his confidence he had to take risks. He had to experience the blocks, the fears one by one. This way he would gain more skill, knowledge and develop his strengths and, more importantly, increase his self confidence.

You can increase your self confidence by focusing on what you fear, and then overcome that fear. Have belief that you can succeed and push ahead. The fears that crop up along the way are fabulous opportunities to gain more strength and increase your confidence level.

If you want to start up a business, as in the example above, but are scared to do so, identify what fears are standing in your way and tackle them one by one. Remember to praise yourself along the way for having the courage to face those fears and anxieties, and reward yourself for every increment, for every increase to your self confidence.

Do you know in what areas and situations you lack self confidence?

Have you ever sat down and asked yourself what makes you feel uneasy and uncomfortable?

Does the idea of attending social events make you feel anxious or nervous? Does the thought of making a presentation make you feel tense or uptight?

Identifying the areas and situations that give you those feelings is very useful and beneficial to you.

I believe the primary reason for these nerve-racking feelings is because you lack self confidence in yourself. The perturbed or edgy, troubled or uncomfortable gut reactions are ways that your unconscious mind tells you that you are short of self confidence in these situations.

For you to have more self confidence at a party where you don’t know many people, for example, breathe in deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth and then immediately head towards someone, anyone, and quickly introduce yourself. Then ask that person’s name followed by a question about themselves.

By taking a couple of deep breaths you regain focus, self confidence and control of your emotions.
