One thing for you to always keep in mind – confidence is built on past successes and triumphs.

What this means is that any success that you had in the past had a great effect of building more self-confidence.

You can strengthen your confidence by simply recapping your previous successes. It doesn’t matter what they are, or how small or how big they are. It doesn’t matter. Success is success!

For you to develop and strengthen your self-confidence, and to expand it into other areas of your life, remind yourself regularly of your past successes.

I’d like you to purchase a notebook specifically for that purpose. Then sit down one evening and write down as many successes and accomplishments that you have achieved. Write them all. All your successes.

At bedtime, open that powerful and impressive notebook. Go through a few of your triumphs. Feel great. Feel a surge of confidence deep within you. Smile, close the book, go to sleep and dream of more successes.

“Look here,” I overheard a father say to his son. “Learn to give yourself credit for every positive thing you have achieved in life.”

Curious, I stopped to listen as the father continued. “You have natural talents and strengths that have manoeuvred you in your life. You have successfully accomplished many things because you have self-confidence in those areas.

“Why don’t you make use of the self-confidence that is already within you, in the areas where your strength lies. Take that confidence to the next level and spread it to other areas in your life.”

Great words of wisdom!

I’d like you to get a pen and pad and jot down 3 strengths and talents that you have. Then chose one strength or talent to focus on and see how you can utilise it in another area.

Get this, the thoughts that you keep relaying in your mind all day long have the potential to turn into beliefs. Your thoughts can create new beliefs or strengthen the ones you already have. I tell you, it pays to keep track of your daily deliberations.

The concept to really understand here is that your thoughts create and influence your beliefs. And these beliefs direct your attitude and behaviour. Simply put, your beliefs control and run your life.

Whether you are confident or not depends on your beliefs. Do you think you are confident? Do you believe you are confident? Do you believe in yourself?

Everything you believe is a product of your thoughts, the words that you repetitively say to yourself.

For you to believe in yourself and in your abilities to take action and tackle new situations or challenges you have to step up and enhance your self-confidence. Repeat confident thoughts and they will become confident beliefs.

One of my friends used to walk around and mumble quietly with his chin to his chest, “I’m just not good enough to make the Sunday football team.”

What he didn’t realise at the time was that the thoughts that he kept repeating to himself greatly influenced his level of confidence.

The words, I’m just not good enough, were very powerful and negative. What my friend should have done was kept his thoughts positive and optimistic.

By being decisive in his mind set that he was good enough, he would have stepped out of his comfort zone, gained more confidence and would have proved that he was able to handle that new challenge and make the team.

Negative thoughts do have the power to render people weak, uncertain and ineffective; whereas positive thoughts depict certainty, courage and confidence.

Try this, replace disempowering thoughts such as, “I just can’t do this” with, “This is easy. I can do it.”

Substituting negative thoughts with positive inspirations is a powerful way to gain self-confidence.

Are you the type of person that feels overjoyed at achieving something for the first time? Last week I picked up the phone and spoke with my ex-boss, whom I don’t like very much!

Why did I do it, you ask? Well, I wanted to do something I was uncomfortable with.

You see, all successful people have one common factor: they purposefully step out of the confinements of their comfort zone so as to increase their self-confidence. In other words, do something they don’t like.

In step 4, under the sub-heading Inflate Your Comfort Zone to Reach Confidence, I wrote that for you to become confident and to attain more in life, you have to be prepared to step out and challenge your comfort zone; to dare yourself.

To get ahead in life, to follow through with your desires and dreams, increase your confidence by doing something you have not done before, or something you are uncomfortable with.

Start off by doing something simple. This is a sure way to acquire self-confidence. And what else? You will be overjoyed that you did that ‘something’. How cool is that?
